During this session, held at the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, we got to hear from multiple speakers. Pam Garcia-Rivera is an incredibly important resource for students in the SJMC and her services include professional development as well. Garcia-Rivera is able to provide feedback on resumes, cover letters, interview questions and practice, networking and helping students best utilize LinkedIn. Students are also encouraged to join clubs and student organizations to broaden their personal network and can utilize these relationships to learn more about internships abroad. To find internships, students are encouraged to use a variety of methods, such as the student job board, resource lists, Handshake, an organization’s website, word of mouth and the Journalism School job board. There are international internships available to UW-Madison students in the summer. It is recommended that students apply for scholarships for abroad internships as the expenses for an abroad program may be a barrier for students, especially when the internship has little to no pay. For more information, students can reach out to the international internship team. This group is able to provide guidance for those interested in an international internship and their guidance carriers through the entirety of the internship.
